Council is seeking advice from AEMO (Australian Energy Market Operator) and looking to bring energy market experts to the table to explore renewable energy group Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) opportunities for viable businesses. In May 2023, Council agreed to participate in a Business Renewables Buying Group aimed at supporting businesses with large electricity loads to aggregate and procure renewable energy through a 'retail PPA'. A retail PPA is a contract to purchase renewable electricity through a retailer, rather than a model which would involve more risks for the businesses (such as a contract for difference or any other model with uncapped exposure to wholesale market prices) or purchase of energy certificates only (Large-scale Generation Certificates - LGCs).
