Kingston's goal is to reduce Council’s corporate emissions to net zero by 2025.
In July 2021, Kingston entered into an agreement to ensure the majority of streetlights and all large and small Council facilities were powered by 100% renewable electricity (through a combination of a Power Purchase Agreement and through purchasing Greenpower)
Greenhouse gas emissions associated with the purchase of electricity via a renewable energy power purchase agreement (PPA) are eliminated as the electricity is generated at a renewable energy facility, most commonly a large scale solar or wind farm. Zero emission electricity is recognised, accounted and removed from calculations of Net Emissions through the generation of approved Large-scale Generation Certificates (LGC)s, which can be purchased in conjunction with electricity or separately. One LGC is produced when a renewable energy facility generates one megawatt-hour of electricity
Since 2018/19 Council emissions are down more than 60% once electricity use covered by the renewable energy PPA is removed
